If You Never Try, You Will Never Know
Everyone has a dream or 2 or 5 or 10. Those dreams can be big or small, but what is important is that they are yours. Take a second and think about what that would look like if you brought one of them to life. Does it bring you success? Does it help others? Does it change the world? What are you feeling? Are you happy? Are you proud? Sit with that experience and those emotions for a minute.
Now what if it was real? What is stopping you? It could be a plethora of things, self-doubt, fear, judgement of others, or anxiety about stepping out of your comfort zone. All of those things are scary, but life is a complex system of calculated risks. We make decisions everyday, big and small, that help shape what our futures look like. Can you afford to take the risk? What does it actually cost? Money, time, or friendships? Again, all things to consider, but if you can take a step forward, just a small step with minimal risk, what are you waiting for? What if one step turns into ten? What if all of the sudden it is a mile? Every journey begins with one step forward.
That to me is a big risk. Quite honestly, I felt it risky to start a blog and share things that are on my mind. What would my friends think? Do I have the time and the energy to produce content? Am I even mildly interesting or have anything to add to the world? All of those are fears I still have, but one anxiety outweighed them all, and that was never giving it a shot. What if one person were to tell me that my words helped or inspired them? And the answer to that question was simple, it would mean that this was all worth it to me. All of that was my risk calculating. Sure a few people in my life wouldn’t understand, I might not post on a regular schedule, and/or no one will ever read this, but despite that the tug on my heart was still to try. Thus, I came to the conclusion to step out of my comfort zone and into a new project.
So what is one of your dreams or goals? What is keeping you from trying it out? Even if it is just getting your toes wet and seeing where it can lead you. What risk calculating do you need to do?Think back to that moment earlier, what is keeping you from making that your everyday life?
